Progressive jackpot slots: a pool fed by every bet, paid to one

How the pool is built

Every bet on a progressive game has a slice taken from it and added to the jackpot, and on a networked progressive the game is linked across every casino that carries it, so the pool grows with the whole network's play. When the jackpot is won the studio resets it to a seed, an amount the studio funds itself, so the counter never starts at zero. Networked pools are why the numbers reach millions: no single casino's players could feed one, and the studio, which runs the pool, pays the winner from it, with the casino as the venue. Local progressives, fed by one casino's play and paid by that casino, are smaller and fall more often; the counter on the game says which kind it is by how fast it moves.

The record on the books

Guinness World Records lists the largest jackpot payout in an online slot as EUR 17,879,645, won by Jon Heywood on Mega Moolah at Betway on 6 October 2015. Mega Moolah has reportedly paid more since, and the entry as published still names that win.

What the ordinary session pays for it

The jackpot contribution comes out of the return to player. A progressive's published RTP is split between the base game and the jackpot, and the jackpot's share is only ever realised by the one player who wins it, so every other session runs on the base game's share, which is lower than a comparable non-progressive slot's. The trade is explicit: a slightly worse ordinary session in exchange for a ticket in a draw with the longest odds in the lobby. A player who enjoys the ticket is paying a fair price for it; a player who wants a slot session is paying for someone else's ticket. Bonuses and progressives rarely mix. The seed is not free money

A freshly reset pool is at its seed, funded by the studio, and the odds of winning it are the same as at any other size. The pool's size changes the prize, never the chance; a large pool is worth playing for only in the sense that the same long odds pay more.
